Lin, Pey Chwen
Born in 1959, Lin Pey-Chwen received her doctorate degree in Creative Arts from University of Wollongong, Australia. She is currently the director of the Digital Art Laboratory in the Department of Multimedia and Animation Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts. She has also participated in many contemporary art and digital art forums in Taiwan as a keynote speaker and jury. Currently, she chairs the Digital Art Lab, one of Taiwan's leading digital art research and creation teams. “Lin Pey Chwen + Digital Art Lab.” was founded as part of the Department and Graduate School of Multimedia and Animation Art at National Taiwan University of Arts in 2001. The group was established with an aim of integrating resources from within and outside the university, and to encourage graduate students from different disciplines to participate in digital art research and experiments through courses, exhibitions and symposiums. Students with an art and technology background have the opportunity to integrate various digital media and concepts, such as CGI, interactive installation, multimedia, and Internet art, to create a brand new language of art for the digital age. The process and outcome of their experimentation can be seen on the Digital Art Lab website. For more detailed information, please visit http://ma.ntua.edu.tw/labs/dalab/Pey Chwen’s works have been exhibited in many major art museums all over the world, including 《Women’s Interpretation》at the National Taiwan Museum of Arts (1993), Antithesis and Intertext at Taipei Fine Arts Museum (1995), Beautiful Life at the Queens Museum of Art (New York, USA, 2004), Catching – Back to Nature Series at Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (2004), Virtual Creation and Specimens at MOCA in Shanghai (2006), Eve Clone #2 at Exit and VIA Art Festival in France ( 2007), Morning Dew at Godwin-Ternbach Museum in New York (USA, 2008), and etc. Her art achievements are featured in several prominent art history books such as: "Digital Aesthetics", "The History & Development of Digital Art", "Taiwan Art History", "Art of Taiwan", "Taiwan Contemporary Art History", "1980-2000 Contemporary Arts in Taiwan", "Installation Art in Taiwan Since 1991-2001" and "History of (Contemporary) Taiwan Women Artists 1945-2000". and etc.
Her creative concept originated from her own comprehension, experience, and belief toward God. She developed her abstract series when she was the member of the important art group of Space II. During her staying in Australia between 1993 and 1996, Lin was deeply inspired by the Feminism Art Movement, which has compelled her to produce several series of artworks that criticized the issues of gender, culture, history, and society. In 1999, the catastrophic earthquake of September 21st and the guidance of her spiritual mentor Prophet Elijah Hong, have led Lin to dedicate her creativity to a new subject "Back to Nature" series. This series reveal the technology-driven civilization and the abnormality of artificial creatures by mocking men’s folly in their desire to play the role as the Creator through the use of technological semiotics, digital images and interactive interfaces.
